Happy = Healthy
May 21, 2025
For more than a decade, scientists have pursued the connection between happiness and health, and research shows that having a sense of peace, fulfillment and purpose leads to a healthier, more balanced and longer life. But, how do you get there? Here are a few suggestions:
The happy diet—There is a fundamental connection between good nutrition and a sound mind and body. And, it’s not something to take on overnight. Little changes in diet can improve your mood. Try switching a hamburger with a fish dish, which is full of healthy omega 3 fats. Or, eat brown rice instead of white.
Sleep, sleep and more sleep—We are a nation of sleep deprived individuals. There is laundry to get washed, homework to help with, dogs to walk, work to do… The list never ends, but the best news is those things can wait. Try getting just 30 minutes more of sleep every night and see how it affects your mood.
Get outdoors—Research shows exposure to nature and the outdoors has a significant influence on our mental outlook. Just being in a “green environment” can lower stress levels.
Get a furry baby—The American Heart Association has linked the ownership of pets, especially dogs, with a reduced risk for heart disease and greater longevity. Not only does taking care of a pet get you more physically active, but they also provide companionship. Caring for a living animal can help you feel needed and wanted, especially if you live alone.
